Grandma’s Famous Sugar Cookies

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda

Mix sugar, butter and egg and flavorings.  Mix thoroughly.

Stir in dry ingredients.

Refrigerate 2 to 3 hours.

Roll dough out to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with cookie cutters.  If desired, chop some walnuts and mix with sugar — brush cookies with egg white — sprinkle with walnut mixture. Bake at 375° for 7-8 minutes.
